The Christmas season is rapidly approaching, I can't believe it's almost November! If you're a planner like myself, you have probably started brainstorming a list of the Christmas gifts you want to buy. Or perhaps you're a last-minute shopper and looking for some ideas. Either way, I'm here to help! If you have an avid book reader in your life and need some killer ideas, look no further. This is my book lover gift guide.
Items range from, $- inexpensive (can be under $20) to $$$- big ticket items.
Bookmarks. $
I am obsessed with magnetic bookmarks in particular. They don't fall out, so if you're throwing your book in your bag, this is perfect. I have purchased a lot from Indigo/Chapters, but also local shops while travelling (I also highly recommend checking out Etsy.com). It's a brilliant option for students because they won't fall out of your textbooks when they get roughed around in your backpack.
Book Paraphernalia. $$
I love book-related merch! A personal favourite of mine is the company Litographs. They create items with the words of your favourite novels printed all over them. My T-Shirt from them has the first few thousand words of Jane Austen's Persuasion on it (my fav Austen novel). I love it because it is not in your face but subtly bookish. I always get tons of compliments when I wear it. Another great one is book socks, whether that is cozy reading socks or ones with delightful book-related patterns printed all over them.
A Book. $$
I know this seems obvious but choosing the right one can be intimidating. I recommend going one of two routes, with a book you love or one you know they want. Gift them a copy of your favourite book (if you know they are interested in that genre or open to new ones) and write a note about why it is your favourite. Asking people what their all-time favourite book is, is one of my favourite things to ask. After hearing them tell me why their book is the best, I almost always add it to my To Be Read pile. Alternately, I recommend secretly snooping on their Goodreads account if they have one. On Goodreads, users can add books to a list called Want To Read, scroll through this section to get ideas. But try and take a look at their bookshelf first (or ask someone in their house to look for you) and make sure they haven't already purchased it.
A Book Tracking Journal or Scratch Off Poster. $$
This is a gift for the sentimental person in your life. Us bookworms love a challenge, whether that is meeting a reading goal for the year or finishing a list of them. For those who love classics, the scratch of book posters can be a fun challenge and super motivating. Alternately, get them a guided book journal. This is a fun keepsake to track what they have read, their thoughts and ratings. It's interesting to look back on and remember all the books that we loved or disliked, even after we have long forgotten about them.
Book Shopping Date. $$
This idea is for those people who's love language is quality time. Offer to take your person for coffee and go book shopping with them. This gift could also include a gift card for them to spend at the bookstore that day. This way, they can pick out their book, and you get to spend quality time together while doing it. Even though my boyfriend is the opposite of a reader, he will regularly buy me a warm drink and follow me around the bookstore without complaint. Having him be a part of something I love doing makes it that much more special.
An E-reader. $$$
This is great for someone who travels a lot or takes a book with them everywhere they go. It is also my most expensive gift idea. An e-reader is lighter and more compact than a physical book, plus it can hold so many books at once. I have one that I love travelling with. There are three brands you hear about in the E-reader game, Kindle, Nook, and Kobo. You'll want to do some research and think about the person receiving it. For example, do they like reading books from the library? Not all e-readers support borrowing books. Consider getting one that is water-resistant for those who read by the pool or in the bathtub. I also highly recommend one with a backlight and matte screen finish. This will reduce reflections when reading in the sunshine (think iPad glare) and allow you to read at night without lighting up the whole room (or waking up the person sleeping next to you), a win-win.
I hope this has given you some ideas and guidance for your shopping endeavours. If you try any of the above, I would love to hear about it. Make sure you leave me a comment or send me a message @literarilylauren on Instagram.

Lauren.
