My Favourite Plot Twists of All Time

I LOVE a good plot twist moment. If the author can shock me, I can guarantee an additional star on the book's Goodreads rating. For those of you who also enjoy a jaw-dropping moment, I've compiled a list of my favourites. It is unclear if telling you these books have incredible plot twists will, in turn, ruin the plot twists, but I hope not. If so, I apologize in advance. Here is my attempt at a spoiler-free guide, or as spoiler-free as possible.

I Let You Go by Clare Mackintosh

This book is about the investigation and aftermath of a devastating hit-and-run accident. I have written about I Let You Go a few times because it was slow to start with a very gratifying reveal later in the story. I loved this plot twist and the moment when you have to backtrack and re-read the last few pages because you couldn't have had it that wrong the whole time. The author sets you up perfectly. I was so glad I never gave up on this book I ended up giving it 5-stars.

The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides

This psychological thriller about a woman who kills her husband is guaranteed to keep you on your toes. I wouldn't describe it a scary, but eerie and engaging for sure. The reveal is so fantastic in this one I am excited just reminiscing about it. I would love nothing more than to re-read this book again for the first time. 5-Stars for this one!

Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owen

I loved this story about a young girl who was neglected and left to raise herself in the marsh. It is an incredible novel about trauma, prejudice, and human connection, that completely lived up to my expectations. I wouldn't describe Where The Crawdads Sing as having a huge plot twist as much as having a shocking reveal. It is a perfect example of a one-liner where the author slips in a sliver of truth, and leaves your jaw on the floor. Easily a 5-star read.

Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty

When I think back to when I read Big Little Lies, the only two things I remember are that I thoroughly enjoyed it, and the plot twist that puts this book on the list. This one stands out because I didn't see it coming at all. The author surprises you with a piece of the puzzle that you didn't know you were missing. Though it's a bit different from the HBO show adaptation, both are entertaining and full of drama. I gave the book 5 -stars.

He Said She Said by Erin Kelly

He Said She Said is a book I have not seen anyone talk about before! It follows emerging couple Kit and Laura, who accidentally witness and terrible event and try to help the victim. Their lives change as they become sucked into the aftermath and take you on a wild ride full of lies and suspense. This book was a surprise, and I loved the ending. It has one of those one-liners that changes the way you see things entirely. I gave this one 4-stars.

We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

I don't know what to say about this one except, wow. This book follows Cadence Sinclair while she uncovers the truth behind a horrible summer accident that altered her life. This book was frustrating at points and had me constantly questioning things until the author finally revealed the whole picture. The themes of family, wealth, and trauma throughout the story pulled me in, and I didn't want to put it down. 5-stars all around.

You should be aware I don't give out 5-star ratings as often as this post may make it appear. These books are on here because they were my favourites of all the plot twists I've read. Please let me know if I have convinced you to pick up any of the above. You can always leave me a comment here or message me directly on Instagram. Happy reading!

Yours Literarily,

Lauren
