“You haven’t read Big Little Lies yet?” says every single person who asked me what I was reading over the last couple weeks. And now I know why….
This is the second book by Liane Moriarty that I have read, and she does not disappoint. I loved the strong female characters almost instantly, but even more so as I learned about their flaws. I even got on board quickly with the mom drama, though I’m not a mother, I found myself getting riled up reading about the bullying and gossip going on and Pirriwee Elementary. I could have punched a few characters, and eliciting that kind emotion is a sign of good storytelling.
I also wanted to comment on the writing style. Moriarty juggles a lot in this book, between multiple character viewpoints and the police interview scripts, but somehow she makes it work. Not only does it flow smoothly, I think it actually makes the book better because it helps move the story along. There is a depth and complexity that is added to the story by having that variety of narratives, I can’t imagine the same story being told differently.
I wish I could say I had it all figured out the whole time, but I didn’t. Moriarty kept the mystery alive for so long, I didn’t think I could wait any longer to find out who died and how. I also never expected so many intricate connections between characters, and I definitely didn't predict the murderer, if you did... you probably cheated. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves stories with secrets, lies, and drama.
After having read the book, I can't wait to get started on the tv series. I am so curious to see how they will adapt it! I am interested to hear what everyone else has thought about the book and show? Comment below.
