Have you washed yours recently? Have you truly looked in the mirror at the raw, unfiltered version of yourself? And if you did what did you think? I can tell you I did this morning and the first thing I thought to myself wasn't kind. Girl, Wash Your Face by Rachel Hollis is the perfect self-help book out there for all those ladies looking for an extra boost. With Hollis' words in mind, I stopped myself this morning mid-thought and decided to not be so hard on myself.
What stood out to me about Rachel Hollis was how upfront she was with her insecurities. She was honest, even when it didn't paint her in a flattering light. For someone who is writing a book giving advice that people are supposed to look up to, I thought this was magnificent. By being candid she reminds us that it's okay not to be perfect, but to keep trying to be your best self anyways. Hollis also talks about learning from the mistakes we make and not being so hard on oneself in the process. As a reader, her honesty made her approachable and feel like we were friends chatting over a glass of wine. I enjoyed her voice throughout the book so much because of how funny and relatable she was.
Every chapter digs into a lie that we tell ourselves. Something that will only end up hurting us. By breaking down all of these false truths we are forced to step up to the plate and be honest with ourselves. Some of those lies include: I'm not good enough, I should be further along by now, and there's only one right way to be. The main message in the book is that we are each in charge of our own happiness and progress. In order to be our best selves, we have to stop believing all the negative shit we keep telling ourselves. Makes sense, doesn't it?
I loved how much this book talked about dreams, making goals and not being terrified of how big they are. I think this was the conversation that resonated with me the most. After I finished the last chapter I immediately grabbed a notebook and started writing down ideas and goals for myself. Girl, Wash Your Face left me feeling empowered and excited. I think it is so important we find ways to keep motivating ourselves to grow. Motivation doesn't last forever. I think exploring new things that will help propel us forward and continue to inspire us are crucial to our success.
I cannot wait to dig into Hollis's next book Girl, Stop Apologizing which comes out on March 5th! YAY! I can't wait for my next dose of inspiration. For anyone else who has read this book, I would love to hear your thoughts and which chapters were your favourites. I loved it and I will probably gift it to every single one of my girlfriends this year.
Yours Literarily,
Lauren.
