My last read of 2018 was The Christmas Lights by Karen Swan. This book felt magical, adventurous, and climactic as I sunk into it over the holidays. The story takes place in Norway, during the weeks leading up to Christmas. Two adventure/lifestyle bloggers that live picture perfect lives face threats, lies, and obstacles as they embark on their latest expedition.
The concept of being famous is one that is often glorified in the media and by the general public. This book gives you a glimpse into the lifestyle of celebrities, something I dreamed about when I was little. It shows the highlight reel, as well as the less than wonderful parts: the lack of privacy, the fear of safety, and realistic aspects of having a online following. It made for interesting challenges for the characters and played into the dramatic ending of the book.
There were so many good moments and plot twists that I didn't see coming. Which is something I really appreciate in Swan's writing. Although you can depend on a happy ending for the couple of choice, the element of surprise is always around the corner. Swan knows how to lead you away so that you don’t see the punch line coming.
I was increasingly drawn into the setting throughout the novel. The Norwegian winter scene was the perfect Christmas counterpart. Perhaps it’s the northern lights, the mountains, or the private cabin in the snow, but it sounded magical.
Lastly, I loved how all the elements came together for this story, the fame, the suspenseful conflict, and the winter wonderland setting. It made for the perfect holiday read, perfect for anyone needing a little escape.
Yours literarily,
Lauren.
