This book was exactly what I was craving. If you're looking for a cute, funny and flirty book, look no further. Sally Thorne delivers such an engaging and steamy romance story it is bound to put you in a good mood. I loved her characters, their banter, and the suspense that makes every good romance novel so satisfying.
Josh and Lucy are coworkers, both assistants in the same office working side by side, and they cannot stand each other. Tension is increased between the two when they are both up for the same promotion and have to compete against each other. As they fight for the new position, they find themselves thrown together and hidden feelings start to arise.
The highlight of this book for me was the dialogue between the two main characters. It reminded me of the Gilmore Girls style banter that we all loved while watching Rory and Lorelai. The back and forth between the two leads was a highlight. This is all part of the mental games they play to get in each other's head and drive each other crazy. It made me giggle, and look forward to every moment between Josh and Lucy, building suspense in hopes of them getting together.
I also loved the depth of the two main characters and how much growth they had throughout the novel. Lucy and Josh are polar opposites, and therefore both able to learn something from the other to become a better version of themselves. They are not stagnant, or flat, or boring. In fact, I didn't find any of the characters, even the more minor ones, boring at all. I only wanted to spend more time in this world. Thornes female lead Lucy is relatable, intelligent, and ambitious. I loved how career-driven she was, never letting her romantic life get in the way of crushing her goals. Josh, I like to describe as hard on the outside and sweet on the inside. I loved his backstory, from his family drama to career moves, it made him more dynamic than so many male leads I've read in recent years.
I truly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it to all my fellow romance lovers. I will warn you, it is not PG, but it’s no Fifty Shades either. It falls somewhere nicely in between. I loved it enough to run out the next day and pick up Thorne's second novel, 99 Percent Mine. The Hating Game has put me in the mood for all the romance I can get my hands on! Plus, I hear there is going to be a film adaptation, I can't wait!
Yours Literarily,
Lauren.
